HP Pavilion dm1-4010us Full Review: Better Than A Netbook.
The latest HP Pavilion dm1 (dm1z) makes a good choice for people looking for an affordable, compact laptop with good overall performance. The new HP Pavilion dm1-4010us ($480) is a simple and straightforward update to the dm1 series laptops from early 2011. You get an 11-inch netbook with a traditional rounded clamshell design. The biggest design change here is that the new generation of dm1z laptops feature mostly black plastics with silver accents rather than mostly silver with black accents. Build quality is on par with other HP Pavilion notebooks and HP mini netbooks ... meaning slightly above average for a budget laptop. The plastics used in the chassis are durable and thick enough to prevent flex or cracking under pressure. The plastic screen lid provides adequate protection for the screen, but the middle of the lid does bend inward under firm pressure (be careful jamming this into overhead compartments on your next flight).

It's a bit thicker from the back because the battery is of a higher capacity and it sticks out; but that's OK, we'll take more battery life over a thinner form factor. Its full dimensions are 12.96 x 0.63 (F)-0.83 (B) x 9.36 inches and it weighs 4.03 pounds.

Alienware M15X Gaming Laptop

Alienware has introduced its M15x 15-inch gaming laptop. The company claims that it is the fastest 15-inch gaming machine out there. The M15x is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor with GTX 260M GPU. It supports up to 8GB of RAM.

Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad L520 review

Lenovo has launched a new notebook in its Thinkpad series of notebooks, Lenovo Thinkpad L520. Lenovo Thinkpad L520 is a 15.6-inch business notebook is.

Inside the L520 is a brand new Intel Core i5-2540M processor running at 2.6GHz. It's seriously fast and only the Core i7s of Samsung's RF711 and Apple's MacBook Pro are noticeably quicker. Essentially, it's capable of running pretty much anything you can throw at it.

The L520 isn't designed for playing games, though. It relies on the Core i5's integrated graphics chip, which is capable of decoding HD video but not running the latest games. In any case, the 15.6in screen has a matt finish to cut down on glare from overhead lighting - perfect for office environments, but not as impressive when watching a movie with the lights down.

DELL INSPIRON 14R Laptop

Dell inspiron 14r has introduced a new laptop in the world that is powered by new 2010 Intel mobile core i3 processor, packs ATI Radeon HD recharge graphics and revised each memory controller.

Build and Design
The design of the Inspiron 14 looks like an enlarged version of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and Mini 10 netbooks. At first glance you can easily see that Dell designers are trying to establish clearly identifiable designs for all Dell notebooks: all Inspiron laptops look similar, Studio laptops have the same general design as other Studio laptops, and one Studio XPS notebook likewise looks like other Studio XPS notebooks. At this point shoppers should be able to identify Dell's entry-level products (Inspiron), mid-range products (Studio) and high-end products (Studio XPS) with little more than a glance.

The chassis of the Inspiron is constructed from a combination of exterior plastics and an alloy interior framework for a balance of affordability, durability, and light weight. While the Inspiron 14 doesn't feel quite as durable as the new Studio 14z, the Inspiron 14 should survive the average use and abuse by college students ... although the plastics may start to show some wear and tear after some time inside a book bag.

The keyboard in the pre-production unit felt quite firm with good key spacing and a good depth to the key throw. There was some keyboard flex above the optical drive in the pre-production unit, but nothing that isn't normal for a budget notebook. Each key has a textured black finish and a relatively flat surface similar to the keyboards on the Dell Mini series of netbooks ... only larger. Unlike the Studio 14z, there is no optional backlit keyboard, so students will need to keep the lights on during late-night study sessions.

Performance and Features
We didn't have an opportunity to benchmark the pre-production unit of the Inspiron 14, but Dell made it very clear that this notebook is aimed at students who want a good laptop for general use at an affordable price and don't need all of the features found on the more expensive Studio 14z. For example, the Inspiron 14 lacks FireWire and eSATA and the starting price only includes Intel integrated graphics. On the other hand, the optional 1600 x 900 screen, optional Blu-ray drive, and optional ATI discrete graphics give the Inspiron 14 some impressive bang for the buck.

This is where the $449 starting price of the Inspiron 14 looks extremely impressive compared to the $649 starting price of the Studio 14z. Sure, the starting price of the Studio 14z includes a better processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics and a better selection of ports, but the Inspiron 14 still offers a built-in optical drive and dedicated 7-in-1 media card reader. Bottom line, back-to-school shoppers are going to have two very impressive options from Dell this year.

Laptop ASUS K53E Review

The ASUS K53E is latest thin yet powerful 15.6-inch multimedia and general purpose consumer notebook. It features the latest Intel "Sandy Bridge" processors and a large 640GB hard drive. Keep reading to find out more.

The latest Intel processors are really fast and they can easily do any task that you can throw at it. The speed has been drastically improved as compared to the last year models. One thing missing here on the Asus K53E-B1 is a dedicated graphic card. This system has Intel integrated graphics. I played Unreal Tournament III and got 43.7 fps or frames per second. Street Fighter IV fared 28.2 fps. This isn’t great for high end and new PC games but will still go well with casual gamers.

When put through my battery drain test, the Asus K53E-B1 survived for a little over four and half hours and this is good for a 15 incher. For this size, I have a minimum benchmark of three hours and was glad to see that this laptop went past that limit. Credit must be given to the new efficient processors from Intel; they have performed very impressively in a lot of 2011 laptops that I have tested so far.

Another interesting feature on the Asus K53E-B1 is that the manufacturer is offering a two year warranty and there is also a one year accidental damage protection. Other companies just give you one year for service and parts and you need to pay more money for additional coverage if you want. Asus also has a 24-7 toll free number and on the manufacturer’s Website, you will find driver downloads and support info. But be wary of the fact that there are a lot of Asus laptops out there and hence it can be hard to track down content for your model.

Laptop Sony Vaio Y Review

The team at Sony has completely reinvented the VAIO Y notebook with some help from AMD. The new Sony VAIO Y (technically called the "VAIO YB") is Sony's first laptop to feature the new AMD E-350 processor and graphics. This 11-inch laptop is more expensive than a typical netbook but offers significantly better performance. If you need an lightweight travel laptop with enough power for multimedia fun this might be the netbook alternative for you.

laptop processor war here at CES with AMD's new Fusion APUs and Intel's fresh Sandybridge CPUs gunning for core territory, but Sony's not pickin' sides when it comes to its new seriously mobile VAIOs. Kicking it off on the lower end is the 11.6-inch, 3.2-pound VAIO YB Series, which is being refreshed with AMD's Brazos E350 APU. Sony doesn't consider the YB to be a netbook -- in fact, it doesn't plan to continue with its netbook line after this quarter -- but like most of these other Fusion systems (see: HP dm1 and Acer AO 522) the Y promises long battery life along with really solid graphics. Actually, according to the product manager, the platform has been out performing Intel's Pentium processors. The system will be available with Windows 7 Home Premium, 320GB or 500GB hard drives, and 4GB of RAM -- as you would expect, the $549 base configuration only gets 2GB of RAM and 320GB of storage. The Intel-powered YA Series will still be available with a Core i5 processor option for close to $750. (Note: We got some hands-on time with the YB Series before it was released, check out the hands-on here.) So, what does Sony have in store on the more powerful ultraportable end? The 13.3-inch VAIO S series is a four-pound Core i3-powered ultraportable clad in a durable magnesium casing. It doesn't seem to be configurable with discrete graphics, but it will have WiDi. That enough for ya? Hit the break for the press releases if you're looking for more.

The stats aren’t bad. It’s got an i3-380 (unlike, say, the MacBook Air’s Core 2 Duo) running at 1.33GHz, anywhere from 2GB to 8GB of memory, and storage of 320GB. I suppose you’d want an SSD these days, but that probably depends on how you’re going to use the laptop. Oh, and the display is 1366×768.

Laptop Dell Latitude 2120 Review

Dell is launching a new Latitude 2120 netbook at CES. This 2120 has the same specs that previously 2110 had but its computing power is more of the single core Intel Atom N470, chipset used in its predecessor was dual core N550. But this new device has the highly upgraded processor with an optional Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator.

The 2120 at first glance looks like something out of a toy catalog – it's thick, block-like, and blue. My first impression was, "There's no way Dell is serious with this design." But they are, and the kid-friendly design fits with the education market, so let's take a closer look.

The blue exterior is actually a rubber coating; it has an inlaid square pattern and feels soft yet durable. It extends to the underside of the machine as well, save for the battery. As a computer intended for business use, this might not have been the best color choice though. The 2120 is constructed out of high-strength ABS plastic. The matte black plastic has a slightly granular texture and is quite solid. Keeping in tradition with business notebooks, there is no glossy plastic used on the exterior.

The overall build quality is excellent. None of the plastics flex under pressure. The display resists twisting well yet could use more protection from the back; I was able to produce some ripples by pressing on the back. The display hinges are strong and do not allow the display to wobble back and forth.

Laptop Lenovo ThinkPad X220

The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 is Lenovo's upgrade to the W510 mobile workstation notebook. This 15.6-inch notebook is powered by up to an Intel Core i7-2920XM processor and equipped with up to a discrete NVIDIA Quadro 2000M GPU, switchable to Intel HD integrated graphics. Like last year’s model, the full HD (FHD) displays on the 1920 x 1080 resolution models have a 95% color gamut and a huey PRO color calibration system application. At the time of writing this review Lenovo has not yet announced if there will be an upcoming multi-touch screen option like last year or not.

In this review we will measure the ThinkPad W520 up with other workstations in its class by putting every specific detail of it to the test. Read on to find out if this is the laptop for you.

ThinkPad workstations have always been known to be top-of-the-line, updated systems in terms of performance, FHD display, build quality, battery and power consumption, and carry a host of features such as the Fingerprint Reader, nice upgrade options, and a great port selection. This workstation is expected to live up to those who have high ThinkPad standards and expectations.

From the looks of it, the outer build of the W520 is about the same as the previous generation workstation model, the W510. Lenovo stuck with the same ultra sturdy hinges, still evenly built width-wise due to a build fix to the older models. The hinge and display cover are so well-built that it takes a good amount of force to even tilt the screen back or forward (which is reassuring of course). The palm rest and keyboard are both extremely tough as well—showing no flex when typing regularly and only a minimal amount of flex when trying to press down extremely hard.

Some minor outer design changes include the newly-added Lenovo company label on the front of the screen casing, new carbon fiber mixed with the glass fiber onto the display cover (no more reinforced plastic), and the absence of paint over the glass fiber/reinforced plastic on the base. On that note, some consumers may find that the finish on the base and display cover to be disconcerting because it easily collects dust, grease, and fingerprints. In short, the finish may prove to be high maintenance throughout the daily usage of the notebook. Even though most black-colored notebooks will seem to show dust more often just because of the color, this laptop seems to carry grease from the fingers more so than most other business notebooks I’ve had the pleasure of using.

Lenovo made the bottom upgrade panels and keyboard easy to remove, for the most part, and labeled each screw spot appropriately. For example, if you’ve had even just a little bit of experience with upgrading notebooks you will most likely know right away which screws to remove to get to the RAM under the keyboard due to Lenovo’s icons. The bottom of the workstation provides simple access to the first two memory slots and another simple access panel for the hard drive. There is one screw you’ll have to remove to get to the hard drive and two screws to remove to reach the bottom RAM panel (and two to open up the keyboard). The wireless card under the keyboard should not take very long to locate and remove if you’re looking to swap it out. One other thing I’d like to mention is that the W520 has a potential capacity of up to 32GB of RAM, but for now you will only be able to upgrade to 16GB at the time of purchase.

Lenovo ThinkPad W520 Review

The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 is Lenovo's upgrade to the W510 mobile workstation notebook. This 15.6-inch notebook is powered by up to an Intel Core i7-2920XM processor and equipped with up to a discrete NVIDIA Quadro 2000M GPU, switchable to Intel HD integrated graphics. The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 is Lenovo’s upgrade to the W510 mobile workstation notebook. This 15.6-inch notebook is powered by up to an Intel Core i7-2920XM processor and equipped with up to a discrete NVIDIA Quadro 2000M GPU, switchable to Intel HD integrated graphics. Like last year’s model, the full HD (FHD) displays on the 1920 x 1080 resolution models have a 95% color gamut and a huey PRO color calibration system application. At the time of writing this review Lenovo has not yet announced if there will be an upcoming multi-touch screen option like last year or not.

The ThinkPad W520 sports the same traditional black ThinkPad aesthetic we've come to expect over the years. Underneath a soft-touch raven black lid, you'll find a typical all-black ThinkPad deck with a light blue Enter key on an otherwise black keyboard. The bright red TrackPoint that sits between the G and H keys on the keyboard makes the boldest statement on this minimalist design. However, the green lights that illuminate the power, volume up/down, and microphone mute buttons are a welcome touch.

At 14.7 x 9.7 x 1.4 inches and 6.2 pounds, the ThinkPad W520 isn't the thinnest or lightest 15.6-inch notebook on the market, but, considering the notebooks' heavy duty components, it's surprisingly portable. In fact, the W520 is the same weight and only a little bit larger than the 14-inch Dell Latitude E6420 when equipped with a nine-cell battery (13.9 x 10.25 x 1.25 inches, 6.2 pounds). We had absolutely no problem carrying the W520 around the office or toting it across town in our bag. Our biggest complaint was the 1.4-pound power brick, which noticeably added to our load.
